Using OfficeTalk in Single-User mode for evaluation

For evaluation you can user OfficeTalk with the internal database. A database server in not required in this mode. The mode is not for productional use ! In this mode you can best evaluate OfficeTalk because it is fast installed. If you have installed the evaluation version, the succeeding steps (1 to 6) are done by the setup.

To switch a production version into evaluation mode, perform the following steps:

  1. Start OfficeTalk.
  2. Cancel the login dialog.
  3. Open the dialog Settings with the menu Settings....
  4. Switch the selection field Database to No.
  5. Close the dialog with the Accept button.
  6. End OfficeTalk.

After step 6 OfficeTalk works with the internal database OfficeTalk.bos. This mode is usefull to get a feeling about OfficeTalk without much work or involving a database administrator. If you close OfficeTalk with the menu File - Close, changes are stored into the internal database. If you close OfficeTalk with the window close button of the dialog OfficeTalk for: <name of the worker>, changes are not written to the internal database. You can switch between the evaluation- and production-mode because they do not affect each other.

First installation using PostgreSQL-Server

The prerequisits using PostgreSQL database server:

  1. PostgreSQL Version 8.0.3 or higher is installed.
  2. The environment variable PATH includes the path to the PostgreSQL tool psql.exe. You cat set the variable after PostgreSQL is installed.
  3. On each computer the ODBC entry for PostgreSQL must be added with the system control.
  4. The PostgreSQL installation contains the example database template1.

If you install OfficeTalk the first time, perform the steps:

  1. Install OfficeTalk with the setup. Ensure that the system program regsvr32.exe is existing in the sytem directory. It is needed for the installation of OfficeTalk. If the program does not exist, you can download it from the Microsoft website or install it with the newest service pack. The file Mfc42.dll with the version 6.00.8665.0 or higher must also exist in the system directory. If you do not have this file, you can get it from JOOPS.
  2. Create on each client the ODBC entry in Tabulator Systerm-DSN. Select the database type PostgreSQL-Unicode and name the entry PostgreSQL. In the next dialog type in:

Database: OfficeTalk
Server
: The hostname of your PostgreSQL-Servers (localhost, if PostgreSQL in running on the same machine).
User Name: The username of the database administrator.
Password: The password of the database administrator
Description: An optional description.
Let all other settings unchanged and save this with the button Save.

This ODBC entry for PostgreSQL must be created on each computer.

  1. Start OfficeTalk You are asked for the database server's host name, the login and password of the database administrator. The database OfficeTalk , the user OfficeTalk as owner of the database OfficeTalk with the password OfficeTalk is created.
  2. You get a second login dialog. You are asked for the environment name, the login and password of OfficeTalk. Type in both for login and password OfficeTalk. For the environment name type in the name of the ODBC entry (PostgreSQL).
The OfficeTalk tables are created. For this step the directory Library must contain the SQL-scripts OfficeTalkForMSSQL.sql and SerialNumbersForODBC.sql. This will take a time.

The first start should be done by the database administrator, because of the requested login for creating the database.

First installation using Microsoft SQL-Server

The prerequisits using the Microsoft SQL-Server :

  1. Microsoft SQL-Server Version 7 or higher is installed.
  2. The environment variable PATH includes the path to the PostgreSQL tool osql.exe. You cat set the variable after Microsoft-SQL-Sever is installed.
  3. On each computer the ODBC entry for Microsoft-SQL-Server must be added with the system control.
  4. In the MSSQL-Server-Configuration properties - Security the Authentification is set to SQL - Server and Windows-NT.

  2. Create at the client an ODBC entry for a System-DSN:

First tabulator:
Name: OfficeTalk
Server: Hostname of Microsoft-SQL-Server
Description: any text

Second tabulator:

With SQL Server authentication using a login ID and a password entered by the user
Connected to SQL Server to obtain default settings for the additional configuration options
Login-ID: sa
Password: (the password for sa)

Thirth tabulator:
Use ANSI quoted identifiers
Use ANSI nulls, paddings and warnings

  1. Start OfficeTalk
You are asked for the database server's host name, the login and password of the system administrator.
    - The database OfficeTalk is created.
    - The user OfficeTalk as owner of the database OfficeTalk with the password OfficeTalk is created.
  2. You get a second login dialog with Environment, Login and Password for OfficeTalk. Type for Login and Password OfficeTalk. Type as Environment the name of the ODBC-entry (OfficeTalk). The OfficeTalk tables are created. As a prerequisite the directory Library must contain the SQL scripts (OfficeTalkForMSSQL.sql and SerialNumbersForODBC.sql). This will take a time.

The first start should be done by the database administrator, because of the requested login for creating the database.

First installation using Oracle SQL-Server

The prerequisits using the Oracle SQL-Server :

  1. Oracle SQL-Server Version 8 or higher is installed.
  2. The environment variable PATH includes the path to the Oracle tool sqlplus.exe. You can set the variable after Oracle SQL-Sever is installed.
  3. If you install OfficeTalk the first time, perform the steps as described.

Start OfficeTalk
You are asked for the database server's host name, the login and password of the database administrator.
- The database OfficeTalk is created.
- The user OfficeTalk as owner of the database OfficeTalk with the password OfficeTalk is created.

  1. You get a second login dialog with Environment, Login and Password for OfficeTalk. Type for Login and Password OfficeTalk. Type as Environment the name of the Oracle instance fror OfficeTalk.

The first start should be done by the database administrator, because of the requested login for creating the database.

Database users and OfficeTalk workers (Single-Sign-On)

There are 3 variants to connct to the database:

  1. First login (e.g.: OfficeTalk) with password and second login for the worker with its own login and password. In this variant, the user must login two times.
  2. Each worker is known as user in the database (equal login name and password) and the general settings for Single-Sign-On is set. You can activate the Single-Sign-On in the dialog Settings, reacheable by the menu File - Settings. In this variant only one login is required. Therefore loginname and password of the database and the worker inside OfficeTalk must be equal. The worker must have assigned as user in the database all permissions for the database OfficeTalk. If OfficeTalk does not find a worker with equal login name and password, you get a separate login dialog for OfficeTalk worker (see variant 1).
  3. For each worker a equal name user is created in the database and the general settings for Single-Sign-On is not set. This variant is like the first variant.

Create an OfficeTalk user in the database for Single-Sign-On

  1. Activate Single-Sign-On in the dialog Settings with Yes.
  2. Perform the menu Create database user for the worker Company first and once times.
  3. Perform for all the workers, which should support the Single-Sign-On, the menu Create databaseuser too.

The prerequisites are:

  1. For the company the menu command Create database user is executed first
  2. The worker is stored
  3. The worker has a login and a password
  4. The search path for the database tool (sqlplus.exe, osql.exe or psql.exe) is set
  5. You know the login for the database administrator

Update - Installation

If you update an OfficeTalk with a newer version please read the file changes.html first. This file may contain important informations how to update the database too. You can find changes.html on the CD only !

First start of OfficeTalk

If you start OfficeTalk the first time, a company-worker is created automaticly. The login for this worker by default is:
